Music in Early Childhood
For children age 3 to 6 year-olds
The Music in Early Childhood program is a 30 week program that starts in September of each year. Children three years of age and their parents attend once weekly for 45 minutes. Children from four to six years of age attend once weekly for one hour.
This child-centered approach to music education introduces the language of music to students three to six years of age. Materials and methods include those of Zoltan Kodàly and Carl Orff. Setting a foundation for musical literacy, this program helps children discover the elements of music through participating in musical activities such as nursery rhymes, singing games, folk songs, chants and movement. Repertoire and activities are carefully chosen to support the goal of music literacy, with success measured in development of vocal skill and co-operative group performance. Children who complete the program can be expected to read and write rhythms, to sing, read, write and transpose melodies using the Solfa System, and to know common musical terms and signs. Children are encouraged to actively discover and experience musical concepts such as musical comparatives (loud - soft, fast - slow, etc.), rhythm, beat and melodic contour through a variety of songs, games and movement.

Parenting With Music
For Parents and their Infants and Toddlers
Parenting with Music is a 10 week program with start dates in both September and January. Classes are held once weekly for 40 minutes. Learn how to share the joy of music-making with your newborn to 36-month-old child and to stimulate their musical interest and growth during this critical time. Education researchers suggest that, of all stages of life, infancy is the time when music has the most important impact on an individual. Singing to and with infants and the saying of rhymes and chants provides a wonderful communication between parents and child, and establishes a foundation for later development in language, mathematics, music and movement. This program teaches you and your child traditional nursery repertoire, finger and toe plays, bouncing rhymes, lullabies and songs.
- Infants from birth to 12 months
- Toddlers from 12 to 23 months
- Advanced Toddlers from 24 to 36 months
